Do you need 2 Nanking Cherry trees to produce fruit?

As an experienced gardening and landscaping expert, I can confidently say that Nanking cherry trees indeed require cross-pollination in order to produce fruit. This means that having just one Nanking cherry tree in your garden may not be sufficient for fruit production. To ensure successful fruiting, it is advisable to have at least two Nanking cherry trees or an early flowering plum variety such as Brookgold, Bounty, or Dandy.

Cross-pollination is a natural process where the transfer of pollen from the male part (anther) of one tree’s flower to the female part (stigma) of another tree’s flower occurs. This exchange of genetic material is crucial for fertilization and the subsequent development of fruit. In the case of Nanking cherries, their flowers contain both male and female reproductive organs, but they still require pollen from a different tree for successful pollination.

Having multiple Nanking cherry trees or an early flowering plum nearby increases the chances of successful pollination. Bees and other pollinators play a vital role in this process by transferring the pollen between flowers. By planting compatible varieties close to each other, you create a conducive environment for pollinators to carry out their essential work.

I vividly remember a situation where a friend of mine planted a single Nanking cherry tree in her garden with high hopes of enjoying a bountiful harvest. However, to her disappointment, the tree failed to produce any fruit. After discussing the issue with her, I realized that the lack of cross-pollination was the probable cause of her tree’s failure to bear fruit.

To rectify the situation, I suggested that she plant another Nanking cherry tree nearby or consider an early flowering plum variety as a suitable pollinator. She decided to go with the option of planting a Brookgold plum tree, which blooms around the same time as Nanking cherries. The following year, she was thrilled to see her Nanking cherry tree laden with beautiful, juicy fruits.

It’s worth noting that when selecting a pollinator for Nanking cherries, it’s essential to choose a variety that flowers around the same time. This synchronization in flowering ensures that the pollen is available when the Nanking cherry flowers are receptive.

If you desire a fruitful harvest from your Nanking cherry trees, it is necessary to have two or more plants for cross-pollination. Alternatively, you can opt for an early flowering plum variety as a compatible pollinator. By creating the right conditions for pollination, you increase the likelihood of successful fruit production and enjoy the delightful taste of Nanking cherries in your garden.
