Do snow peas come back every year?

Snow peas, also known as sugar snap peas, are an annual plant, which means they complete their life cycle within a single growing season. Unlike perennial plants that come back year after year, snow peas need to be replanted each season. However, you can save some seeds from your snow pea harvest to plant again the following year.

To save snow pea seeds, it’s best to choose a strong and healthy plant from your crop. Look for a plant that has produced a good yield of tasty peas and appears to be disease-free. By selecting the best plant, you’re increasing the chances of growing strong and productive snow pea plants in the future.

Once you’ve identified the plant you want to save seeds from, allow some of the pods to dry on the vine. This means leaving the pods on the plant even after the peas inside have fully matured and are no longer suitable for eating. The pods will start to turn yellow or brown and become dry and brittle. This usually happens towards the end of the growing season when the plant begins to decline.

When the pods are completely dry, remove them from the plant and open them up to collect the seeds. The seeds inside should be hard, smooth, and slightly wrinkled. Avoid using seeds that are discolored, damaged, or have an odd shape, as they may not germinate well.

Gently separate the seeds from the pods and discard any debris. It’s a good idea to spread the seeds out on a paper towel or a clean, dry surface and allow them to air dry for a few days. Make sure they are fully dry before storing them, as any moisture can lead to mold or rot.

Once the seeds are dry, store them in a cool, dark, and dry place. A small envelope or airtight container works well for seed storage. Be sure to label the container with the variety and date of collection for future reference.

When it’s time to plant the snow pea seeds again, soak them in water for a few hours before sowing. This can help to speed up germination. Plant the seeds in well-draining soil, about 1-2 inches deep and 2-3 inches apart. Water them gently and keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds sprout.

As the snow pea plants grow, provide support in the form of trellises or stakes to help them climb. Snow peas are vining plants and will benefit from vertical support to maximize their growth and yield.

Snow peas are not perennial plants and do not come back every year. However, by saving seeds from a healthy plant and properly storing them, you can replant snow peas in the following growing season. Saving seeds allows you to preserve the desirable traits of your favorite snow pea plants and continue enjoying their delicious harvest year after year.
