Do oleanders like full sun or shade?

Oleanders, scientifically known as Nerium oleander, thrive best in full sun. They are highly adaptable and can tolerate even intense heat, such as that reflected from a south or west wall. In fact, the more sun they receive, the better they will grow and bloom.

If you decide to plant oleanders in partial shade, keep in mind that they may not develop their full potential. In such conditions, they might have a lanky and open shape, lacking the dense and compact foliage that is characteristic of well-grown oleanders. However, if you have limited sunny areas in your garden and still want to incorporate oleanders, partial shade is still an option. Just be aware that the plants may not look as aesthetically pleasing as they would in full sun.

When it comes to soil, oleanders are quite versatile and can tolerate a wide range of soil types. However, one non-negotiable requirement for these plants is good drainage. Oleanders cannot tolerate waterlogged or poorly drained soil. If the soil in your garden tends to retain water, you may need to amend it with organic matter or consider planting oleanders in raised beds to ensure proper drainage.

In my personal experience, I have found that oleanders are extremely resilient and can even survive in challenging conditions. I once planted an oleander in a spot that received only a few hours of direct sunlight each day, and while it did grow, it never achieved the same vibrant and lush appearance as the oleanders in full sun. So, if you have the opportunity to provide them with full sun exposure, I highly recommend doing so.

To summarize, oleanders prefer full sun and can tolerate even intense heat. While they can survive in partial shade, their growth may be less vigorous, resulting in a lanky and open shape. Oleanders are adaptable to various soil types but require good drainage to thrive. If possible, provide them with full sun exposure to enjoy their full beauty and potential in your garden.
