Do foxtail ferns come back every year?

Foxtail ferns, scientifically known as Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myersii’, are indeed perennial plants. However, their ability to come back every year depends on the climate in which they are grown. These ferns are native to South Africa, where the winters are relatively mild. In regions with similar climates, such as zones 9-11, foxtail ferns can be grown outdoors year-round and will return each year.

In these lucky zones, where temperatures rarely dip below freezing, foxtail ferns thrive and maintain their evergreen foliage throughout the year. This means that you can enjoy their beautiful feathery fronds and vibrant green color without interruption. It’s truly a delight to have a perennial plant that consistently adds beauty to your garden or landscape.

However, if you reside in a region with colder winters, such as zones 1-8, the foxtail fern will not be able to withstand the freezing temperatures. In these areas, it is best to treat the foxtail fern as an annual plant or provide it with protection during the winter months to ensure its survival.

If you choose to grow foxtail ferns in colder climates, you can try overwintering them indoors. Before the first frost, dig up the fern and carefully remove any excess soil from its roots. Place it in a container with well-draining soil and keep it in a cool, dark location, such as a basement or garage, where the temperature stays above freezing. Water sparingly during this dormant period, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between watering.

When spring arrives and the danger of frost has passed, you can reintroduce the foxtail fern to the outdoors. Gradually acclimate it to the sunlight and outdoor conditions by placing it in a shaded area for a few hours each day and gradually increasing the exposure over a week or two. Once fully acclimated, you can plant it back in your garden or container and enjoy its greenery for another season.

Another option for colder climates is to grow foxtail ferns as indoor houseplants. They can add a touch of elegance and lushness to any indoor space. Place them in a bright, indirect light location, and water them regularly but avoid overwatering. Indoor foxtail ferns may not grow as large as their outdoor counterparts, but they can still provide a unique and attractive touch to your interior decor.

Foxtail ferns are perennial plants that can come back every year in climates with mild winters, specifically zones 9-11. In colder regions, they may not survive the freezing temperatures, but with proper care, they can be overwintered indoors or grown as indoor houseplants. Whether grown outdoors or indoors, foxtail ferns bring a touch of elegance and beauty to any garden or living space.
