Do deer eat silver carpet big ears?

In my experience as a gardening and landscaping expert, I have found that deer can be quite a nuisance when it comes to browsing on plants. However, one plant that I have found to be resistant to deer browsing is the silver carpet big ears (Stachys byzantina). This plant, also known as lamb’s ears, features soft, fuzzy leaves that deer tend to avoid.

I have personally encountered situations where deer have been a problem in gardens and have witnessed them nibbling on various plants. However, I have noticed that they tend to leave the silver carpet big ears alone. This could be due to the texture and taste of the leaves, as the fuzzy texture may be unappealing to deer and they may not find the taste desirable.

It’s important to note that while silver carpet big ears are generally resistant to deer browsing, there is no guarantee that deer will never eat them. Deer behavior can vary depending on the availability of other food sources and the population density in a particular area. In times of food scarcity, deer might be more inclined to eat plants they would typically avoid.

If you live in an area with a high deer population or have experienced issues with deer browsing in the past, it’s always a good idea to take additional measures to protect your plants. Some strategies you could consider include:

1. Using deer repellents: There are various deer repellents available on the market that can help deter deer from your garden. These repellents often contain scents and tastes that deer find unpleasant. It’s important to follow the instructions on the product and reapply as needed.

2. Installing fencing: Erecting a sturdy fence around your garden can be an effective way to keep deer out. Make sure the fence is tall enough (at least 8 feet) and buried at least a foot underground to prevent deer from jumping over or digging under it.

3. Using motion-activated sprinklers: Setting up motion-activated sprinklers can startle and deter deer from entering your garden. The sudden burst of water can be an effective way to keep them at bay.

4. Planting deer-resistant plants: Incorporating a variety of plants that are known to be deer-resistant can help minimize the chances of deer munching on your garden. Along with silver carpet big ears, other examples of deer-resistant plants include lavender, yarrow, and salvia.

By implementing these strategies and selecting deer-resistant plants like silver carpet big ears, you can increase the likelihood of protecting your garden from deer browsing. However, it’s important to remember that no method is foolproof, and deer behavior can be unpredictable. Observing and adapting your approach based on your specific situation is key to maintaining a deer-resistant garden.
