Do chickpeas need a trellis?

When it comes to growing chickpeas, one common question that arises is whether or not they need a trellis for support. The good news is that chickpeas are bush-type plants and can support each other when planted densely. This means that staking or trellising is typically unnecessary.

To ensure proper spacing for your chickpea plants, it is recommended to plant them about 4 inches apart. This allows enough room for each plant to grow and develop without overcrowding each other. By giving them adequate space, each chickpea plant can receive the necessary sunlight, water, and nutrients it needs to thrive.

In terms of planting depth, it is important to note that the depth may vary depending on the variety of chickpeas you are growing. For small-seeded varieties, it is generally recommended to plant them at a depth of about 1 inch. On the other hand, for large-seeded varieties, a planting depth of around 2 inches is usually advised. This depth allows the seeds to establish good contact with the soil and promotes proper germination.

By planting chickpeas densely and at the appropriate spacing and depth, the plants can support each other as they grow. This natural support system helps to prevent the plants from sprawling or falling over as they mature. Additionally, the dense planting can also help to shade the soil, reducing weed growth and conserving moisture.

In my personal experience, I have found that chickpeas grown without trellising can still produce healthy and robust crops. The plants intertwine their stems and leaves, creating a network of support that keeps them upright. This natural support system is especially beneficial in windy areas or regions with heavy rainfall, as it helps to prevent the plants from bending or breaking.

However, it is important to monitor the growth of your chickpea plants as they develop. If you notice any signs of weakness or leaning, you can provide additional support by gently tying the plants to stakes or using plant clips. This can help to prevent any potential damage or breakage, particularly if you are growing taller varieties of chickpeas.

While chickpeas do not necessarily need a trellis for support, they do benefit from being densely planted and provided with appropriate spacing and depth. By allowing the plants to grow closely together, they can support each other as they mature, reducing the need for additional staking or trellising. However, it is always a good idea to monitor the growth of your chickpea plants and provide additional support if needed.
