Are cannas deer resistant in Wyoming?

Cannas, also known as Canna lilies, are beautiful plants that are generally hardy in zones 7-10. However, their deer resistance can vary depending on the region. In Wyoming, where the climate can be harsh and deer populations are abundant, cannas may not be as deer resistant as in other areas.

Deer are notorious for their browsing habits and can cause significant damage to gardens and landscapes. They tend to target plants with tender foliage, including many flowers and vegetables. While cannas are not at the top of their preferred menu, they may still be susceptible to deer browsing if other food sources are scarce.

It is important to note that no plant can be considered completely deer-proof. Deer have been known to eat plants labeled as “deer resistant” when they are hungry enough. However, there are certain characteristics of cannas that may make them less appealing to deer.

One such characteristic is the tough and fibrous nature of their leaves. Cannas have large, paddle-shaped leaves that can be less palatable to deer compared to more tender foliage. Additionally, the height of cannas, which can range from 3 to 8 feet, may deter deer from reaching them easily.

Personal experience has shown that cannas in Wyoming can still be susceptible to deer browsing. In my own garden, I have observed deer nibbling on the leaves of cannas during times of food scarcity. However, in areas where deer populations are not as dense or where alternative food sources are readily available, cannas may be less attractive to deer.

To increase the chances of deterring deer from your cannas, there are a few strategies you can employ:

1. Plant deer-resistant companion plants: Surrounding your cannas with plants that are known to be deer-resistant can help divert the deer’s attention away from your cannas. Examples of deer-resistant plants include lavender, rosemary, salvia, and yarrow.

2. Use deer repellents: Applying deer repellents to your cannas can help deter deer from browsing on them. There are various commercial repellents available, or you can try homemade solutions using ingredients like garlic, hot pepper, or soap.

3. Install physical barriers: Fencing can be an effective way to protect your cannas from deer. A tall fence, at least 8 feet high, can prevent deer from accessing your garden altogether. However, this may not be feasible for everyone due to cost or aesthetic reasons.

4. Create a deer-resistant garden design: By incorporating a variety of deer-resistant plants throughout your garden, you can reduce the overall attractiveness of your garden to deer. Mixing different textures, scents, and heights can help create a less desirable environment for deer.

While cannas are generally considered to be deer resistant, their level of resistance can vary depending on the region and the abundance of deer. In Wyoming, where deer populations are high, cannas may still be susceptible to browsing. Employing strategies such as planting deer-resistant companion plants, using repellents, installing physical barriers, and designing a deer-resistant garden can help increase the chances of protecting your cannas from deer damage.
